Hi.

Welcome to a space that I hope can serve as a connective resource and encouragement for you in your journey of living the wholly joy-filled, purposeful life you were created for.

Rhythms

Rhythms

R Y H T H M S: noun. a regularly recurring sequence of events, actions, or processes; a harmonious sequence or correlation of colors or elements.

5:51am.

Eyes open. The light in the room indicates it is nearing 6am if not later.

I smile. I’d asked the Lord to wake me at 6am today so that I could have time to sit with Him and write before feeding MAM (my nearly 6 month old daughter).

I know I’m called to write, yet I rarely do it. (Apart from the pages of thoughts and prayers found in my journal.)

Called to write. What does that even mean?

When people talk about feeling called to something, or finding their niche or dream — what is the underlying connotation of that. What is the underlying connotation if my vocation isn’t necessarily a calling but rather something I just stumbled into OR just a regular ‘ole job that provides for my family?

The western world, and specifically the millennial and Gen Z generations are far more likely to throw around the world called, calling, in all it’s various forms than those that live in the eastern world or those from generations where what it meant to provide for your family meant that you work, sleep, hug your kids, repeat (1). This isn’t to downplay the work ethic of previous generations. On the contrary, I think there’s something we millennial and Gen Zers can learn from them.

What is it we can learn?

Resolve.

Grit.

Staying.

Remaining.

Choice.

Rhythms (2).

When I look at the lives of my grandparents and parents there is a certain grittiness (3) that marks them. They each chose specific life-rhythms to be devoted to. Their choice to be committed to the work set before them developed both grit and skill.

If grit, skill, and operating from a place of excellence are things I desire then maybe it would help if I learned from the generations that have gone before me and consistently chose rhythms to be committed to.

This is a season of focus in cultivating just that.

Resolve.

Grit.

Staying.

Remaining.

Choice.

Rhythms.

Footnotes

1.  I recognize that there is more than this to providing for a family — I’m just making a point.

2.  This is the furthest thing from an exhaustive list; remember, this blog is basically a public-journal.

3.  Showing courage or resolve // New Oxford American Dictionary (Second Edition)
